How Thermax® works – Irreversible:

Sharply defined melting points of a purified organic chemical provide unique, high precision temperature sensitive phase change indicators with colour change effects.  Each temperature element uses a different chemical compound and is made separately by applying a coating containing the chemical to a special absorptive paper substrate (usually black).  When the rated temperature is exceeded, the chemical melts and is absorbed by the substrate, causing a permanent colour change to black. Labels are sold in packs or rolls. Applications include Process Control, Test & Measurement, Quality Control, Safety Indicators, Warranty and Maintenance.

How Digi-Temp® works – Reversibile:

The temperature-sensitive elements contain TLC molecules that are very sensitive to temperature and change position / twist in relation to changes in temperature. This change in molecular structure affects the wavelengths of light that are absorbed and reflected by the liquid crystals, resulting in an apparent change in the colour of each temperature event.

When the rated temperature of an indicator is reached the TLC molecules twist slightly causing the TLC substance to absorb the red and blue portions of the visible light and reflect the green part. This causes the temperature event to appear green. When the temperature decreases, the molecules begin to twist in the opposite direction, and the TLC reflect a different portion of the spectrum.

Liquid crystals are chemical compounds and mixtures that exhibit the mechanical properties of liquids and the optical characteristics of solids. Liquid crystals that change colour with changes in temperature are known as Thermochromic Liquid Crystals (TLCs). Scientifically they are identified as Cholesteric Liquid Crystals. Micro-encapsulation is the process that primarily protects, stabilizes and makes the liquid easier to use.

Clinitrend® products utilise this technology and feature a continuous display of core adjusted temperature, as indicated by a bright line, which continuously moves back and forth across the temperature range. Readings should be taken at the centre of the line. Latex free.
